Three Players Who Could Make the Move Across to the Super League Next Year
A number of Australian players have made the move across from the NRL to the Super League in recent years as the challenge of playing in another country is proving very appealing. Moreover, those who have opted to switch have had a lot of success in the process, which is inspiring more players to have a go.
Here are three men who are being linked with a move to the UK in 2020.
Joel Thompson
Joel Thompson is considered one of the best second-row centres to play in the NRL. The Manly Sea Eagles signed him from St George Illawarra in 2017 and he continues to shine at the age of 30. Given his age, though, the NSW County Origin representative may need to move to the Super League if he wants a long-term contract for the future. It is thought that Thompson will struggle to get that with the Manly Sea Eagles. A number of clubs in England are monitoring the situation with the player and there would likely be a long queue of interested parties who would be keen to give Thompson the length of contract he is looking for.
Chris Sandow
Chris Sandow has indicated that he is looking to make a return to rugby league and that is likely to come in the Super League. The halfback first made a name for himself for South Sydney Rabbitohs where he scored 485 points over a three-year period. The man from Queensland then joined the Parramatta Eels where he continued to have success. The 30-year-old has been out of the game since 2016, however, he has been training hard with the view to join a Super League club. Sandow did have a one-year spell for Warrington Wolves who are the 13/8 favourites in the rugby league betting this season for the Super League. However, a return to the Wire is unlikely according to the player.
Brendan Elliot
Brendan Elliot was set to make a move to England last year to sign for Leigh Centurions in the Championship, however, the Gold Coast Titans refused to release him as they had a number of injuries in their squad which meant they relied on the versatile player who can feature at centre, wing and fullback. Although the 25-year-old now plays for Manly Sea Eagles, he is unlikely to give up on a move to England where he could gain interest from some Super League clubs now he is a regular starter once again. The Brisbane-born player has failed to settle in the NRL as of yet so if his current situation does not work out in New South Wales, he may look for his next move to be abroad.
For now, the focus for all those in the NRL will be the 2019 campaign as the new season is now up and running where Melbourne Storm have got off to a flying start as they have won all four of the opening games.
